Site
The school aims to open for the 2029/30 school year at Lienaustraße 32.
AURORA is part of the Projekt Schule Berne (PSB) and intends to remain so in the future.
Current Status and Vision A feasibility study is currently underway to determine the requirements for establishing AURORA on a former school campus. Following renovation, AURORA is planned to move into the building directly adjacent to the forest. This site offers the unique opportunity to design AURORA from the ground up in alignment with its pedagogical concept: featuring open functional spaces, ample room for projects, and deep integration into the local neighborhood.
The Goal The objective is to renovate a former primary school building at Lienaustraße 32—located next to the historic, landmarked Fritz Schumacher school building used by the PSB—into a facility for the AURORA primary and secondary school (an independent/private school). The study examines the feasibility of the construction as well as potential cooperation and synergy effects with the PSB, a possible neighborhood café, and further community participation. The results will provide the foundation for developing both the operational and architectural concepts for the interior spaces and the courtyard.
Background The former buildings of the „Schule Berne“ are located in Farmsen-Berne, a diverse district characterized by a mix of green landscapes and urban life. The buildings and the surrounding grounds are owned by the City of Hamburg, which has transferred them to the non-profit cooperative fux eG under a long-term lease (Erbbaurechtsvertrag). Use of the site is managed by the PSB. Both fux eG and the PSB are committed to restoring the historic Fritz Schumacher building for the benefit of the community, focusing on culture, education, and social use. AURORA is currently part of the interim use of the premises, offering an open playgroup and utilizing the space as an office for the founding of an independent, democratic primary and secondary school.
To take this vital step—realizing the feasibility study and initial planning, as well as implementing our pedagogical concept within our current playgroup—AURORA needs 40,000 Euros.
